Colleges are academic homes for students and each undergraduate has a personal tutor who helps to arrange and supervise his or her studies. Oxford students learn in tutorials, lectures and classes, as well as doing a great deal of independent study.

The tutorial is at the centre of Oxford's teaching and learning. At least once a week on average tutors and students meet to discuss work, ideas and progress. The tutorial is flexible and dynamic: it suits those who want to learn how to think. For more on the tutorial system, click here.

The college admits undergraduates in almost all subjects offered at Oxford. The information on the course pages should be read together with the University's prospectus and the course information available from the relevant Department or Faculty. For any other questions about admissions, please visit the Undergraduate Admissions page or email admissions@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk.

Members of the college are also eligible for scholarships and bursaries for excellent academic performance, either in University exams or for other work. Their monetary value is (relatively) small, but they carry with them the entitlement to a fixed amount of free vacation residence in College for academic purposes. In addition, all members of College are eligible to apply for grants to help with vacation travel connected to their course of study. Bearing in mind the increasing costs of study, the College also has some funds to help those encountering severe financial hardship. In addition, there are various prizes on offer to reward both academic and non-academic excellence.
