Aung San Suu Kyi, Alumna of St Hugh’s College (PPE, 1964-67) secures historic victory.

In Burma / Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) has secured an unassailable majority in the country’s first free election in decades. The dominant military have now conceded defeat and have congratulated the NLD on their landslide victory. Ms Suu Kyi will now be able to nominate the new President and to form a government.

Our Principal, Dame Elish Angiolini QC said ‘We are all delighted to hear the news that Aung San Suu Kyi’s party has secured the necessary majority. She has been a passionate campaigner for democracy and human rights for over five decades. Her victory is a testament to her strength and courage over many years. We wish Daw Suu and the people of Burma / Myanmar our warmest congratulations and very best wishes for their future. We are immensely proud of her.’
