St Hugh's College - 125th Anniversary Celebrations

Thank you to all who attended the 125th Anniversary celebrations at the weekend.  We hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did.  It was fantastic to see the whole College community of Senior Members, Fellows, staff, supporters and students enjoying the best of St Hugh’s, over one gloriously sunny weekend to mark the 125th anniversary of the College’s founding.   We were delighted to have over 1200 people return to the College.  Many of whom travelled from a vast array of countries, including New Zealand, the US, Australia, Hong Kong and across Europe to be with us this weekend and share in this very special occasion – a wonderful testament to how much people care about St Hugh’s.

The feedback we have had so far from Senior Members and Fellows alike has been incredibly positive.  Many people commented on how good the College looked, how interesting the programme of events was and how pleased they were to have the opportunity to meet with contemporaries.

If you wish to watch either of the Academic Discussions; the Principal’s Report; the Welcome Speech by the Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Lord Patten of Barnes; or the speeches by Dr Soutter and Dr Schwartz at the Book Launches please go to http://www.st-hughs.ox.ac.uk/senior-members/recorded-anniversary-events.  Photographs are also available on the website by clicking here.

For those of you who were not present at the 125th Anniversary Celebratory Dinner, Senior Member and Honorary Fellow, Gwyneth Williams (PPE, 1972), Controller of Radio 4 and Radio 7 and Guest Speaker, read a special message from Aung San Suu Kyi:

“Happy moments are one of the pillars that keep the spirit uplifted during hard times. St Hugh’s and Oxford are inextricable from my happiest memories, those that I could draw on when the beauty of the world seemed dim.  I so wish I could be with you at this very moment to relive old joys and to stir up new ones for the future.  I would like to thank all my friends for the happiness we shared. To the present students of St Hugh’s I would simply like to say: … Make the most of your time in this wonderful place.”

With best wishes from all at St Hugh’s.
