Academic Background:
I studied for a BA in German and French at Selwyn College, Cambridge, before coming to Oxford to take the MSt in European Literature (German) at St John’s. I undertook PhD research at University College London, completing my doctorate in 2007, when I returned to Oxford to take up a College Lectureship at The Queen’s College. I am currently College Lecturer in German at St Hugh’s, St Anne’s and Queen’s.
Teaching Interests:
I teach undergraduate papers in German literature from the eighteenth century to the present, in particular twentieth century poetry, modernist prose, post-1945 literature and political drama. I lecture on representations of the Holocaust in German literature, and teach the prescribed authors Franz Kafka and W.G. Sebald. I also teach translation from and into German.
Research Interests:
My research interests are in German literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a particular focus on the intersection between literature and politics, on the representation of the Holocaust, and on comparative literature and translation. I am currently preparing my PhD thesis for publication, which explored Paul Celan’s poetry and poetics, in particular his translations of French surrealist poetry. My post-doctoral research project is an investigation of the debate about post-Holocaust art.
