Emma Kavanagh

Learning Development and Support Tutor

As Learning Development and Support Tutor, my role is to ensure that all students at St Hugh’s are equipped with the skills they need to succeed in their studies. I offer 1:1 appointments in term time to help students use their time and resources effectively, from planning and prioritising to revision tips. From Michaelmas 2022, I will also be launching a seminar programme (open to all students) about effective study techniques, as well as a workshop series teaching the fundamentals of academic writing. I work at St Hugh’s two days a week; students can book 1:1 appointments in my office hours by emailing study.help@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk.

Alongside this role at St Hugh’s, I am currently in the final stages of a DPhil in Music, having submitted my thesis in April 2022. My research interests focus on opera and musical culture in France during the long nineteenth century, with particular emphasis on issues of race, gender, and identity. I am also a Lecturer in Music at Magdalen College, and teach undergraduates (including those at St Hugh’s) across a number of theoretical and historical modules on the BA Music course.
