After leaving school, I began an apprenticeship with Symm & Co Ltd, a well-regarded and established Oxfordshire construction company.
Following many years of varied construction experience (mainly in historical, listed buildings) I decided to widen my horizons by venturing into construction management, studying a number of university courses, initially full time, then part time. It was during this period that I worked in similar roles with the central University and then a number of Oxford colleges. The experience I gained working in a range of historic buildings allowed me to successfully complete an MSc in Historic Conservation in 2015.
My current role as Head of Estates at St Hugh’s College has allowed me to concentrate on our wonderful Victorian buildings, which is a nice change from the much earlier architecture I had previously managed. As well as our buildings and estate, having overall responsibility for our beautiful gardens is one of the most pleasurable aspects of my role.
