St Hugh’s Fellow discusses tuberculosis vaccine research
Professor Rachel Tanner, St Hugh’s Tutorial Fellow in One Health and Associate Professor at the University of Oxford, recently appeared as a guest on the immunology podcast ImmunoTea to discuss her pioneering work in tuberculosis (TB) vaccine research.
During the interview, Professor Tanner shared insights into the complex process of vaccine development and the scientific challenges researchers face in creating new TB vaccines. Her research focuses on understanding how the immune system responds to infection and identifying the types of immune responses that are most likely to provide long-lasting protection against tuberculosis.
A significant part of Professor Tanner’s work involves leading and supporting clinical vaccine trials, taking promising vaccine candidates from the laboratory into studies involving human volunteers. These trials are critical for assessing vaccine safety, determining whether they generate strong immune responses, and ultimately evaluating whether they can prevent disease. Through this work, she is helping to accelerate the development of next-generation vaccines that could play a transformative role in the global fight against TB.
ImmunoTea is an international podcast dedicated to making immunology accessible and engaging for researchers, students and the wider public. Professor Tanner’s appearance highlights the impact of the cutting-edge research being undertaken by members of the St Hugh’s community.
