The Lady Ademola Lecture

This year’s Lady Ademola Lecture was delivered online by Professor Anthony G. Reddie who gave an inspiring talk entitled “We are here because you were there. A Postcolonial reflection on a migration journey from the Caribbean to Oxford University”, featuring his early life in Yorkshire as part of an aspirational working class Jamaican family, through to his student years finding his feet, time spent working for the Church, before joining the University of Oxford as the first Professor of Black Theology.

Referencing thinkers and changemakers from Augustine of Hippo to Katie Cannon, Professor Reddie’s inspiring lecture moved through topics of faith, migration, social mobility, and intersectionality. Professor Reddie underlined the critical importance for aspirational role models who can help young people move beyond where they believe their ceiling to be, and the systemic role institutions can play in enabling students to thrive.
