St Hugh’s announces the death of Emeritus Fellow, Dr Laetitia Edwards
St Hugh’s Emeritus Fellow, Dr Laetitia Edwards, passed away on 1 April 2026 at 93 years of age.
Dr Edwards came to Oxford from the University of Newcastle where she was a lecturer, to marry Dr David Edwards who was a Fellow in Mathematics at Lincoln College. She briefly held lectureships at several Oxford colleges including Wadham, St John’s and Somerville. In 1969 she joined St Hugh’s, first as a lecturer and then a year later was appointed Fellow and Tutor in Classical Languages and Literature, remaining in post until her retirement in 1999. During her time at St Hugh’s she served the College as Senior Tutor, Dean of Degrees and Vice Principal. Through her lectures and classes for the wider University, college tutorials and duties associated with the college offices, she was a well known figure in Oxford. Many hundreds of students benefited from her teaching and personal care. She followed their subsequent careers with great interest.
Dr Edwards published her research work in her maiden name, L P E Parker. Her main work was on Aristophanes and Euripides. She continued her research well after leaving her formal College and University posts, writing well into her retirement with her final book on Euripides published in 2016.
Her funeral will take place at St Leonard’s Church, Sunningwell on Friday 24 April at 11.30am.
