On Sunday 2 June, St Hugh’s Tutorial Fellow in History, Professor George Garnett, was a panelist on BBC Radio 4’s “In our Time” hosted by Melvyn Bragg, where they discussed the Italian scholar and important political figure Marsilius of Padua (c1275 to c1343) who wrote ‘Defensor Pacis” (The Defender of the Peace) around 1324 when the Papacy, the Holy Roman Emperor and the French King were fighting over who had supreme power on Earth.
