The Avril Bruten Award for Creative Writing 2025

Applications for the Avril Bruten Award 2025 are now open! This award, supported by the Avril Bruten Fund, is  intended to foster and reward creative writing by graduate and undergraduate students at St Hugh’s College.

A prize of £300 is to be awarded for the best piece of creative writing. Categories of writing that are included in the scope of the award include: poetry; short prose fiction; drama; memoir and life writing; and travel writing. Applicants can submit one short piece, or a selection, including extracts from a longer work. Entries must be no more than 3,000 words – typed and in English – and should be previously unpublished. Entries should have a title by which they can be identified, but should not include the name of the author, so that they can be judged anonymously. They should be sent to the College Office (college.office@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk) by email attachment.

The deadline for applications is midday on Thursday 6 February 2025 (week 3).

The award winner will be announced at an event on Thursday 6 March 2025 in the MGA Lecture Room, at which some of the entrants will have the opportunity to read from their work. We will also hear from the judge, and from Avril Bruten’s own work.

Entries will be judged by acclaimed writer Hannah Lowe who will be offering a creative writing workshop at St Hugh’s from 2.00pm-4.00pm on the day of the award event. For further information or to register interest in the workshop, contact the College Office (college.office@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk).

Full details about the award can be found here.
