The Avril Gilchrist Bruten Award for Creative Writing 2024

Applications for the Avril Bruten Award for Creative Writing 2024 are now open!

The competition is open to all current undergraduate and postgraduate students of St Hugh’s College and the prize will be £250 to the winning entrant.

Categories of writing that are included in the scope of the Award include: poetry; short prose fiction; drama; memoir and life writing; travel writing. You can submit one short piece, or a selection, including extracts from a longer work.

Entries should be sent to the College Office (college.office@st-hughs.ox.ac.uk) by email attachment. They must be no more than 6,000 words (or 40 lines for poetry), typed, and written in English. They should be previously unpublished. Entries should have a title or motto by which they can be identified, but should not include the name of the author so that they can be judged anonymously.

The deadline for applications is 12pm on Monday 5th February 2024 (Week 4).

The winner will be announced at an award event on Friday 1st March 2024, at which some of the students who have entered will read from their work. We will also have the opportunity to hear from the judge and from Avril Bruten’s own work.

The judge in 2024 will be the acclaimed poet Mary Jean Chan.

For further information, please see the full details of the prize here.
