Graduate Accommodation

Graduate Accommodation

One of the great attractions of St Hugh’s is our site. We are fortunate in having large, completely self-contained grounds in Oxford within walking distance of the centre of the city. All our buildings are situated in and around 14-acres of partially-wooded gardens – one of the hidden delights of Oxford.

All our graduate accommodation is situated on the College site in shared houses on Canterbury, Woodstock and Banbury and St Margaret’s Roads and the Dickson Poon Building.

St Hugh’s College is able to offer some accommodation to graduate students, although it is not guaranteed. Please note we are not able to offer accommodation for families or couples.

Tenancies are for a duration of 12 months with the exception of the Dickson Poon Andrew Dilnot Wing (nine months); rooms are offered for single occupancy only.

Applying for accommodation is the final step in the admissions process; once you have been offered a place at St Hugh’s College, returned your financial declaration and fulfilled your conditions, you will be sent an accommodation application form by the Graduate Office. For more information on graduate accommodation please click here.

A certain number of graduate accommodation places are reserved for current graduate students (including non-transferable places for MCR Committee office holders and graduates with documented health, disability and welfare needs). The Accommodation Office will email all graduate students during the academic year with details of the process for requesting accommodation for the following year.

Applications for College accommodation from new graduates will generally be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the year. The following system of priority (highest to lowest) will be used to determine which new graduates can be offered one of the remaining rooms.

  1. Graduates with documented health, disability or welfare needs
  1. Overseas graduates
    1. Overseas graduates from outside the EU who have not lived in the UK
    2. Overseas graduates from the EU who have not lived in the UK
    3. Overseas graduates who have lived in the UK
  2. UK non-Oxford graduates
  3. All other graduates

The same priority criteria will be used for graduates placed on the waiting list.

Different rent bands have been agreed with the MCR committee to reflect the variety in room sizes and facilities available within the allocated graduate accommodation. The rent bands (rent due per month) for 2025-26 are as follows:

Band 1                        £662.48

Band 2                        £701.41

Band 3                        £718.75

Band 4                        £734.87

Band 5                        £758.59

Band 6                        £781.10

Band 7                        £822.77

Studio                         £954.78

If you wish to change or swap accommodation at any point, you must get in touch with the Accommodation Office for permission in advance of any move. Room changes are entirely at the discretion of the College. If you vacate a room in College for any reason (except withdrawal or suspension), you will normally be required to pay rent for the remainder of the year/licence to occupy period, or until the vacated room is reoccupied.

Residence in College accommodation is contingent upon maintaining student status. After completion of your course (Leave to supplicate), your student status ends, and with it the entitlement to remain in College accommodation.

We would not recommend just applying for St Hugh’s accommodation as we are always oversubscribed. Listed below are some of our recommendations for alternative housing options:
