Dr Anna Wilmore is Stipendiary Lecturer in German at St Hugh’s and St Anne’s College, having previously held a similar position at Somerville. She is a medievalist by training, having completed her doctorate in 2023 on Medieval Marian Lyric in Urban Spaces, a comparative project focusing on medieval French and German poetry about the Virgin Mary in towns and cities in the late Middle Ages, exploring the relationship between the Virgin, the city, and poetic forms.
Research
I recently completed my doctorate, which was a comparative project exploring late medieval poetry composed about the Virgin Mary in poetic competitions in towns and cities. I am interested in the way these lyrics reflect the urban spaces in which they were written, and the interplay between the ludic and devotional elements of their performance context. My new project looks and play in pre-modern women’s religious writing.
I enjoy doing outreach work and have offered several taster sessions students interested in languages and medieval studies.
