Michael Bentley is currently Senior Research Fellow in History at St Hugh’s. He is also Emeritus Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews, a member of the Oxford History Faculty and of Christ Church. He has written extensively on the history of British politics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and more recently on historiography and historical thought since the Enlightenment. His books include Lord Salisbury’s World, Modernizing England’s Past and The Life and Thought of Herbert Butterfield (all published by Cambridge University Press) and he is otherwise engaged on a large-scale comparative study of Western historiography since 1750 for Princeton University Press.
