St Hugh’s staff part of winning Oxford University golf team

Congratulations to St Hugh’s Senior Research Fellow and Professor of Economics, Professor Michael McMahon and Lodge Manager, Sam Henry (pictured here with team captain, Colin Bailey) who were part of Oxford University’s golf team who won16-7 against the hosts Cambridge at their annual club championship held at Apsley Guise & Woburn Sands (AGWS) on 3 July 2026.

The match report from Oxford’s team captain, Oriel’s Master of Works, Colin Bailey (formerly St Hugh’s Head of Estates), reads as follows:

“The greens were faster than ever, I am sure we were not the only group to suffer the pain of chipping from one side to the other on more than one occasion or finding a short put end much further away from the hole after our first attempt! We welcomed several first-time players and I must add a special welcome to Helen and Pamela as the first ladies to join us – we hope more ladies will be keen to join in the future. The morning competition had a slight adjustment to format as we played greensomes for the front 9 and 4BBB for the back nine – hopefully the chance for everyone to experience playing the back nine individually was a positive change. I’m sure that there are many stories from the day, including Pamela’s putt that took 3 loops of the hole before dropping. By lunch, the Cambridge team were trailing 8½ to 3½ leaving a lot of work for the singles matches. Hydration and lunch left the squad optimistic, and the afternoon followed a similar pattern with the Oxford team taking most of the points 7½ to 3½.”

Next year’s annual club championship will take place on Friday 25 June 2027 – new team members welcome!
