St Hugh’s welcomes pioneering medical students from Nigeria
St Hugh’s Principal, Michele Acton, recently hosted a welcome drinks reception for Dimeji Olawuyi and Ayomide Oyekan, the first visiting students from the University of Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria to study at Oxford as part of a new international exchange programme supported by the Frederick Foundation (charity no. 1206278).
Their visit follows a reciprocal exchange that saw two Oxford medical students travel to Ibadan earlier this year. Through the programme, students gain valuable experience in clinical neuroscience, enhancing their understanding of healthcare and medical education in different clinical environments.
The students are the first participants in a pioneering scheme developed and coordinated by Professor Gabriele De Luca, Fellow by Resolution at St Hugh’s and Director of Undergraduate Education in Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Oxford.
The exchange programme was proposed by colleagues at the University of Ibadan and is supported by the Frederick Foundation, which was established by Emeritus Professor Margaret Esiri in memory of her husband, Frederick. The couple met while studying medicine at Oxford in 1960, when Frederick travelled from Nigeria to undertake his medical training.
The medical student exchange is one of the Foundation’s two principal objectives. Alongside fostering educational links between Oxford and Nigeria, the charity works to improve outcomes for people affected by stroke in Nigeria and elsewhere across Africa.
