Statement from St Hugh’s College regarding 2020 Admissions

Since the announcement of A-Level results on Thursday 13 August and the issues that have arisen as a result, St Hugh’s College has been consulting with both its own Academic committee, Tutorial Fellows and admissions department as well as those based centrally at the University.
St Hugh’s is committed to ensuring the College is open to the most academically able students no matter what their background, ethnicity or the school they attend. Having shown their outstanding academic ability through the rigorous application and interviews process, we were glad to be able to make offers to this cohort in January.
It is our belief that this year’s formal gradings do not provide any additional evidence of these candidates’ abilities. We have therefore concluded it would only be right in the circumstances we face this year to trust the assessments our tutors made in offering places to these candidates, and to this end St Hugh’s College will admit all offer-holders who were unable to take their A-levels examinations this year. Given the constraint on the number of admissions this year as a result of COVID-19 and the need to keep our community safe next term, we are consulting with a small number of applicants whose courses are now full, and will offer them guaranteed deferred entry for 2021.
