Rowing at St Hugh’s began in 1891 with the purchase of the College’s first boat, but it really took flight in 1976 when students started rowing in Summer VIIIs. The Eighties were our proudest era for rowing, with W1 at the head of the river in 1982, 1983 & 1984 among other achievements.
The Boat Club remains an important aspect of college life, and also remains a costly endeavor. The Club are very keen to ensure that anyone who is willing is able to take part, regardless of financial means. Gifts to the Boat Club can be used for a variety of things, from purchasing new microphones for a cox box, to boat repair, all the way up to hiring a coach and even replacing boats.
