Celebrating the Powys Roberts Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Languages

Dr Michael J. Subialka giving his talk

St Hugh’s is extremely fortunate to be able to offer one of the only Modern Languages specific Postdoctoral Fellowships at the University of Oxford. Thanks to a generous bequest by St Hugh’s alumna Miss Lyned Powys Roberts, we have hosted some of the most promising early career academics in French, Italian and German at St Hugh’s since the scheme’s inception in 2007.

To mark the achievements of our Powys Roberts Fellows, on 20 October 2023 we were delighted to host two fascinating talks given by past award-holder, Dr Michael J. Subialka (Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Italian, University of California Davis) entitled: “A Minefield of Laurels: Italy’s Authors and the Nobel Prize”; and a current award-holder, Dr Katherine L. Travers (Powys Roberts Postdoctoral Fellow in Modern Languages) entitled: “Empires Past and Future: Why Petrarch’s Obsession with Rome Matters Today”.
