St Hugh’s graduate medical student recognised by Royal College of Physicians for work advancing AI cancer vaccines
Congratulations to Jedrzej Jaworski, a final-year medical student at St Hugh’s College, Oxford University and AI Cancer Vaccine Manufacturing Lead for the UK Cancer Vaccine AI Scientist & Supercomputing Project, who has received national recognition after contributing to research selected as one of the top three investigator-led research projects in the United Kingdom for excellence in patient care.
The research award, presented at the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards 2026, recognises investigator-led research that advances medical knowledge and delivers, or demonstrates strong potential to deliver, improved health outcomes for patients. The award ceremony took place in Liverpool and celebrates some of the UK’s most significant achievements in clinical research and innovation.
Jedrzej has played a leading role in developing the manufacturing strategy for the UK Cancer Vaccine AI Scientist & Supercomputing Project, helping to bridge artificial intelligence, advanced vaccine manufacturing and clinical translation. His work has focused on accelerating the design, manufacture and testing of personalised cancer vaccines, helping lay the foundations for bringing these next-generation therapies to people living with cancer across the NHS. His contribution was made alongside his final year of medical studies through his Special Study Module (SSM), demonstrating an exceptional commitment to combining clinical training with world-class research.
Commenting on Jedrzej’s award, Professor Clive Wilson, St Hugh’s Tutorial Fellow in Medicine and Professor of Cell and Developmental Genetics at Oxford University said, ‘It’s a really fantastic achievement for one of our medical students to have played such a major role in winning this award, which is open to clinical research groups across the UK. Employing AI in the design of new cancer vaccines is an important emerging area in developing new strategies to eliminate tumours, and Jedrzej’s ambitious and challenging work in generating such vaccines has helped to position the research team with whom he works at the forefront of these developments. It’s remarkable that he has found the time to do this while also pursuing his medical studies.’
Before studying medicine at Oxford, Jedrzej completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge, where he developed expertise in molecular biology, RNA technologies and advanced laboratory science. He has since combined this scientific foundation with clinical medicine to become part of one of the UK’s most ambitious programmes applying artificial intelligence, robotics and sovereign supercomputing to cancer vaccine development.
The UK Cancer Vaccine AI Scientist & Supercomputing Project is a national flagship research programme developing the next generation of personalised cancer vaccines for the NHS, lead by Dr Lennard Lee, Associate Professor in Oxford’s Centre for Immuno-Oncology. Hosted by the University of Oxford, the programme is supported by ARIA, Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council, bringing together clinicians, scientists, engineers and AI experts from across the United Kingdom.
