St Hugh’s Stipendiary Lecturer in German awarded Women+ in German Studies Book prize

Congratulations to St Hugh’s Stipendiary Lecturer in German, Dr Isabel Parkinson, who has won Women+ in German Studies (W+IGS) Book prize with her proposal for In Two Minds: Consciousness, Gender, and Voice in German-to-English Translation. Established in 1988, W+IGS supports researchers through annual conferences, funding opportunities and networking for postgraduates and early career researchers.

Isabel said, ‘I’m so pleased that my book proposal for In Two Minds: Consciousness, Gender, and Voice in German-to-English Translation – a comparative translation analysis of novels by four renowned German-language women writers – was chosen as the winner of the annual Women+ in German Studies (W+IGS) Book Prize.

‘I always like to tell people that my research is about chatty women, and what I found so compelling about the corpus of texts in my work is this common thread of writers trying to invite us into the mind of their protagonists – to hear her voice, in a historical moment and culture that isn’t always interested in listening.

‘This award is an immense personal victory, and I extend sincere thanks to the committee for believing that this work has something interesting to say, but it also feels like a victory for voices. It offers us a way of hearing minoritised and marginalised voices, and asks – in a time where defining and indeed distinguishing what a thinking subject is grows more difficult daily – what it means to be, to have, and to hear a human mind.

“To all the women in German Studies — keep doing German, stay chatty, and stay connected. Thank you for your attention and support.’
